What to Plant to Make Money?

— Written By Bill Hanlin

We often get calls in the office from people that want to plant something on their land to bring another source of income. Although the different plants and animals that can be grown on a piece of land may seem limitless, there are some factors that need to be considered before getting into production agriculture. These factors will determine what can be realistically grown for an alternative income.

First, and foremost, have an idea of how you are going to market what you grow. If you don’t know what you want to grow, you need to do some research on what people want to buy. By doing your homework on marketing you can avoid the problem of having a crop with no place to sell it. Your marketing options could include pick-your-own, local farmer’s markets and local restaurants.

Next, asked the question “How much time will I have to spend on what I grow?” Some crops, like grapes and vegetables, require much more attention than others. If you are working full time and only have a couple hours a week to devote to the planting, then that is going to severely limit what you can grow to produce a quality crop.

Another factor is how big is the planting going to be. Some people make the mistake of starting out too big and being overwhelmed with all the things they need to do to produce the crop. By starting off small, you can get an idea of how much time and labor is involved and you can always expand later.drought

Finally, I don’t think anyone knows what you can plant that is going to make you a ton of money. However, by considering the factors I just mentioned then you eliminate certain crops and focus in on those crops that have potential for your situation. Before you put anything in the ground, have a business plan and consider all the factors that were just mentioned.
