Eating like those who live in the Mediterranean region has been shown to promote health and decrease risk of many chronic diseases. Here are some proven benefits of eating the Med way.

*Decreases the risk of some forms of cancer.

*Is more effective than a low-fat diet for weight loss in overweight and obese individuals.

*Protects against cognitive decline by protecting the small blood vessels in the brain. 40% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s when you eat the Med way.

*May improve eye health including decreasing the risk of macular degeneration.

*Decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. In one study, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was reduced 52% when eating the Med way.

*Can help manage blood pressure.

*Can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease as much as 30 – 60 %.

A series of six hands-on workshops will be held on Tuesdays, beginning November 5 and will run through November 12, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Transylvania County Center, located at 106 E. Morgan Street, Brevard. This series will include information on how to eat the Med way and preparing and eating various recipes that are influenced by the Mediterranean diet. Space is limited so pre-registration is required. The fee for the classes is $60 which will cover the cost of the food and materials.
