Ensuring FSMA/FDA Compliance During a Pandemic

Regulatory compliance is constantly evolving, especially with regard to food safety. As we become aware of new and emerging food safety challenges, our regulatory framework must change to meet these needs. Pet Food Industry published an article on ensuring FSMA/FDA compliance during a pandemic, discussing how the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the regulatory system and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) response with innovative ways for conducting inspections.

Raw Pet Food Safety Risks Rise With Owner Cognitive Bias

Raw pet food is becoming more popular among consumers, but can also present risks to both humans and pets. A recent study in the United Kingdom found that consumers tend to underestimate the health risks associated with improper handling of raw products.

Pet Food Industry published an article about how raw pet food safety risks rise with owner cognitive bias. The article urges consumers to follow these practices:

  1. Thaw raw meat-based pet food in a separate sealed container in the refrigerator.
  2. Do not wash raw meat.
  3. Remove and dispose of any raw meat-based food not consumed by pets and clean the feeding area.
  4. Ensure surfaces, utensils and bowls used for raw pet food are segregated from other kitchen equipment and are washed thoroughly after each use.
  5. After handling raw pet food or feeding bowls, wash hands for 20 seconds using soap and rubbing all parts of the hands and fingers before rinsing and drying thoroughly.

New Research on Essential Fatty Acids for Sows
