The 4-H State Avian Bowl was held virtually on July 14, 2021. Participants were quizzed on their knowledge of Raising Waterfowl, Avian Systems, Growing Blue Ribbon Pullets, Ratites, the Commercial Poultry Industry and Embryology. Leading up to the competition, teams met weekly for review and practice. Seven Junior teams competed. Those teams were Bladen County, Craven County, Edgecombe County, Rutherford County, two teams from Catawba County and a combined county team.

Carteret County 4-H’er, Bethany Copeland, and her teammate from Halifax County, made up the combined county team. Although they did not finished first, this was a great opportunity for them to expand their poultry knowledge, meet new friends and participate in friendly competition.

There was also a Senior Division Category where teams from Bladen, Catawba, Edgecombe and Rutherford Counties participated.

In the Junior Division, Catawba County took 1st, Rutherford County finished 2nd and Craven County placed 3rd. In the Senior Division, Catawba County took 1st, Bladen County finished 2nd and Rutherford County placed 3rd.

The 1st place Senior Team won a paid trip to the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference that will be held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky in November!

Congratulations to all the youth who participated in the 2021 Avian Bowl.
