poc holding handsRacial disparities in healthcare have been a large topic of conversation for many years, but recently more so. The number of people of color who experience this type of systematic discrimination is exacerbated by the lack of doctors of color within the medical field. Many communities have displayed how a lack of opportunity and resources place people of color in disadvantaged and life-threatening positions time and time again throughout history. Despite medical racism being recognized as a societal issue, a lack of quality of care for people of color has failed to be reformed.

We touched base with Timi to learn more about her initiative to raise awareness on medical racism. We learn about her personal experiences illustrating the issue, the mindset which drives her methods for highlighting other’s stories, and the role mental health plays in the black communities as well.

Medical Equality QuoteTimi also shares two heartbreaking stories about how medical racism and a lack of preventative care are critical topics of conversation, even for those who work frontline in healthcare. She proposes that eliminating this issue for people of color begins with becoming familiar with the topic and other’s experiences– just as she has.
