As part of the Western NC Strawberry Preplant Meeting, NC State Extension will be offering Respirator Fit Testing for all growers who need to meet EPA requirements for handling pesticides labeled for respiratory protection.
All growers and applicators are welcome to attend, but appointments are required. Please contact Matthew Clay at mhclay@ncsu.edu or 336-651-7333
Why Fit Testing is Required
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that anyone working with certain pesticides must complete three steps before respirator use:
1. Medical Clearance – Verifies that you are healthy enough to safely wear a respirator.
2. Fit Test – Confirms that your respirator forms a proper seal with your face.
3. Respirator Training – Ensures you know how to correctly use, maintain, and store your respirator.
Documentation of all three is required for compliance with federal regulations.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
• You will complete the required OSHA questionnaire if not already done.
• If you do not have proof of medical clearance, NC Agromedicine nurses will complete an evaluation on-site prior to the fit test.
• You must bring the exact make, model, and size of respirator you plan to use (cartridges not needed for testing).
• Facial hair must not interfere with the respirator seal.
Cost
$55 for both medical clearance & fit test
$30 for either service alone
